People visit New York City for all different reasons including the culture and Broadway shows, the food and life of the city, and the many museums, amongst other reasons. One often overlooked reason why people visit New York City is to see the various skyscrapers scattered around the city. While many of these are concentrated in the midtown and financial districts and therefore easy to tour, having a list of the critical skyscrapers can greatly improve on the sightseeing tour.
Empire State Building
Located on 34th street and 5th avenue only a few blocks from Penn Station, the Empire State Building (ESRT) has long been a notable skyscraper in the New York. First built during the Great Depression, the Empire State Building in many ways has come to define New York City’s economic development. The building is interesting enough from the outside, but you can also take an elevator to the top of the building and get a scenic view of the city from the observation deck. There is even a celebrity walk each year and many stars have shone there including that of Canadian singer Celine Dion.
World Trade Center
The World Trade Center has replaced the Twin Towers after the terrorist bombing on September 11, 2001. While the World Trade Center is notable for its historical significance alone, there are many notable things to see in the new building including a memorial museum, an observation deck, and a wide range of dining and shopping options. The World Trade Center is located in the financial district of New York City and was even. I sited by President Barack Obama while in office.
The Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building is the quintessential art deco masterpiece building located on the east side of midtown Manhattan. While the Chrysler building has an observation deck, it is closed to the public and occupied by a private firm. Instead, you can visit the lobby and take a tour, or just enjoy the splendor of the building’s exterior.
Also located in Midtown Manhattan, the Chrysler Center is a unique set of buildings with notable shopping options including luxury handbag and watch stores, a Lego store, and a chocolatier. An ice skating rink is also open seasonally and many events are run throughout the year. At the top of the rock is an observation deck that provides a wonderful view of the city. Rockefeller Center is littered with celebrities including stars like Jennifer Lopez who visited Seth Myers on set.
A trip to New York City wouldn’t be complete without stopping by some of these skyscrapers. Take a tour of them and visit their observation decks, or simply enjoy them from the outdoors or from across the river in Brooklyn or Queens.
